Annually, I take my vehicle in for a state inspection. I take it to a local shop and team I trust, praying the team finds nothing new or even unearths an underlying issue. Without thinking, you probably do the same. Yet, rarely do I peak under the hood or inspect the vehicle on my own without being prompted. When we suspect an issue from any myriad of indicators, we look.
Yet, so many us apply the same logic inadvertently to our hearts; regular heart inspection is only done when required. Why not more often? Isn't this important? Isn't your heart more important than your physical vehicle?
In reflecting this week, I realized this. I know there is some grease, grime, and lose parts. Honestly, I just rather not look and deal with whatever I know or suspect may be underneath. It is much easier to change the outside. And go. Or wait in this instance. Maybe conversations are mirrors, inspection bays. The person you are speaking to- An inspector? A mechanic? Neither? Through a series of unlikely inspections, I recognized conversations can be mirrors, lights into dark, dingy, and easily overheated and neglected spaces, inspections. Are all conversations meant to be inspections? Certainly not. But, they may be, should be, and probably are revealing what is in our hearts. What shape is your equipment? What does your informal maintenance plan look like?
