Mariah Carey: Multi-Octave & Multi-Syllabic

Updated: Dec 27, 2020

Mutli-American Music, Billboard, Grammy, NCAAP Image, Soul Train, and World Music Award Winner Mariah Carey is internationally renown and acclaimed for her long-standing contributions to the music industry, particularly in style. She is a living legend. It's undisputed fact. That being said, even in her recognized accomplishments, one element of her style we tend to overlook, credit, and fail to register and assess is her lyrical command of the English language (alongside other artists and songwriters). Think about some of Mariah's hits. What stands out? While I am sure the list would run longer than what or who is on Santas's, I commend Mariah Carey as a verbalist, one who is skilled in her use of words (in lyrics). Her use of words allows her to communicate a depth and range that allow her to reach and express herself to a multidimensional audience- worldwide. And I think that is worth emulating.

In an era of restrictions, why be contained or even satisfied with the handful of words everyone else already uses, overuses, and abuses? My advice- build a descriptive and versatile vocabulary. Even though comparatively imprecise in many respects, English implicitly gives you an overabundance of words you can use to qualify and borrow from other languages when the native tongue is insufficient.

What's noteworthy about Mariah Carey is that her ability to use words stems from her lyrical construction. The goal of having a well-developed vocabulary is not to impress others, but to enjoy and employ the diversity in communication and expression God given at our disposal. It's like having a vehicle with six gears over four. While everyone does not need 10 cogs, a few more would benefit and empower the majority of us. We cannot all be iconic vocalists, but we can be better-equipped verbalists. Here are three multi-syllabic words from the "All I Want Christmas" vocalist uses (some of which even rhyme with the lyrics- another feat in its self). Can you name the hits the words below come from?

Indefinitely

Incessantly

Inseparable

Should these words be in your vocabulary? Have others? Other words that that should be incorporated into future lyrics?
